The new developments shaping Canberra’s landscape
The Canberra landscape will have some new additions this year with several notable developments expected to commence construction.
Last year, there were more than 1,135 development applications lodged to the planning and land authority and more than 930 applications were decided.
Here is a snapshot of the developments set to change the face of the capital.
Braddon
Braddon is renowned as the hipster haven of our capital and joining this bustling suburb is Founder’s Lane. The development resides on the former public housing block aligning Cooyong Street, Ainslie Avenue and Currong Street. No doubt you will have seen an ad or ten for Founder’s Lane on the television, with a robust marketing campaign designed to attract first home buyers and down-sizers who are looking to enjoy a lively atmosphere and central location.
Alongside the 329 apartments due for completion later this year, an application for an additional 207 apartments is currently under consideration by the planning directorate.
Canberra City
The city will have two major developments commencing construction, the first is stage one of ‘The Barracks’ development which will occupy the current long stay carpark site on London Circuit adjacent to the Police station. Once completed, the development will stand at 25 metres high and include apartments, retail tenancies and a 750-space public carpark.
The second development, which is intended to inject life into Garema Place, will be a new 5 star hotel called ‘The Garema Hotel.’ This development will not only include 191 rooms, retail shops, a food hall, a ground floor cafe and restaurant on the mezzanine level.
Woden
Woden has had a resurgence in the previous years with new apartment complexes re-energising the Woden district.
Former public service buildings, Alexander and Albemarle, have been left vacant for almost eight years and are now set to be re-energised by transforming the existing buildings into loft-style apartments.
Not far around the corner, the former Tradies site will be undergoing a $400 million development, with construction of a 24-storey building which will comprise of 798 apartments, retail and commercial spaces.
Campbell
The former petrol station located at Campbell shops is set to be transformed into a $7.8 million development for mixed commercial and residential use.
Higgins
The former Higgins Primary School site be will transformed into ‘The Henry’ retirement village which will include 48 single-storey townhouses and 52 apartments split across two buildings. The estimated $38.7 million project, was named after the suburb’s namesake, justice Henry Bournes Higgins.
Greenway
Another instance where a developer will re-imagine an old building or 10 to be precise, will take place with the construction of a $200 million aged care facility on the site which once housed the Department of Social Services. The apartments are estimated to house 450 residents, including 16 dementia rooms and up to 100 high care units.
Stromlo
Construction has already started on the $36.6 million leisure centre located at Stromlo Forrest Park. The centre will cater to the residents of Weston Creek, Woden and the Molonglo Valley and include a gym, leisure pool, toddlers’ pool, creche and grand-stand seating.
Dickson
Dickson’s former motor registry site has been pitched as the DKSN precinct with a $160 million mixed used complex commencing. Home to public servants, apartments, restaurants and commercial spaces.
